Notes for Jacob Joseph Wirtz Sr.: General Notes: The following information has been graciously provided by Jeanie Virts LaGrave. Jacob Virts, Sr., began the settlement at Elvan, contracting with master builder, Ben Lakin, for a two and one-half story house overlooking the South branch of Dutchman?s Creek. The creek, and the Germans who settled there were affectionately known as Dutchmen. The settlement was a mile and one-half west of Lovettsville (once called Thrasher?s store.) The house was built in 1810 and became know as the Stone House of the Dutchman. The Virts place remained the area?s only farm until 1866 when Silas D. Kalb built a two story stone house a mile and one-half west. A few years after the stone house was built, Jacob had a log cabin built for his farm help, a quarter mile south of his home place. By 1910 the cabin had collapsed. Jacob and his wife Elizabeth George lived on the farm and raised their family there, until his death in 1829 and according to Jacob?s will, their eldest child, Elizabeth ?Betsy? inherited the Stone House on the Dutchman. Betsy married David Conrad in 1816 and their daughter Jane Conrad was next in line to inherit the Stone House on the Dutchman. Jane married Charlie Johnson and she and her family lived on the farm for many years. During the Civil War, Matt Conrad (a cousin) fought off Union Soldiers who tried to confiscate the horses. The Johnsons had always had fine horses and had a race track where Curt Johnson trained them. Many of these fine animals were sold in the District of Columbia. Robert G. Johnson was one of the many Johnson children and the father of Freida, Esther and Columbia who live in the George House at George?s Mill. After the elder Johnson?s died, John Ebb George bought the Virts farm in 1908. The estate still remained in the Virts family, as John Ebb?s wife was Orra Virts, granddaughter of Jacob Virts Sr. After the death of John Ebb George the farm came into the hands of Samuel Henry George and his wife Cecelia McKimmey who lived on the place most of their lives. The farm was then left jointly to their three daughters, Edna George Albaugh, Margaret George Keena and Eliza George Myers. ?I was born in the Stone House on the Dutchman, and although I did not live here for many years, I have always thought of the Stone House as home. When I returned a few years ago, I began at once on a program of restoration and improvement which is still in progress. I am fortunate in have a good many old family furnishings for the house?, writes Eliza George Myers. During 1870?s and 1880;s George Anderson, a New Yorker and a school teacher walked two and one-half miles one way over the 800 foot climb over Short Hill to teach at Water?s School. Anderson had practiced walking in the Union Army. He settled by the Kalbs after the war and married Mary Ann Elizabeth Shores, raised by a Mrs. Brown at the Virts? cabin. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Stone shows "Jacob Wirtz, d. 7 APR 1829, 60y, 10m, 12d.

Notes for Jacob Joseph Wirts Jr.: General Notes: The following information has been graciously provided by Jeanie Virts LaGrave. According to the 1850 (Maryland) Census taken August 16, Jacob Wirts was accessed the following: 300 acres of improved land and 100 acres of unimproved land valued at $11,000.00; $150.00 worth of farming equipment and machinery; 6 horses, 4 milk cows, 12 head of other cattle, 10 sheep, 25 hogs, livestock valued at $1000.00; 100 bushels of wheat, 1500 bushels of Indian corn, 300 bushels of oats, 30 lbs. of wool, 8 bushels of Irish potatoes, 200 lbs. of butter, 10 tons of hay, and $225.00 worth of slaughtered meat. He also owned 2 slaves, one female mulatto, aged 32 (possibly Jane Scoggins, who was the wife of William Scoggins. Jane lived in the area and was still in good health at the age of 93 in 1921, according to Mr. Grove?s history of Carrollton Manor). Jacob also had a male mulatto slave age 11 in the household when this census was taken, possibly Jane?s son. I have located the grave site of Jane and William Scoggins and have a picture of their tombstones. They are buried in the St. Joseph?s Catholic Church. Jacob could not read or write and was born in Virginia, and occupation was listed as farmer. Also living in the household was a Susan M. Wirts, aged 17, born in Virginia (1833), and John Virts, aged 45 born in Virginia, listed as a laborer, and 3 black laborers, George Hopkins, aged 17, John Hopkins aged 14, and George Stoops, aged 45 (they were freed men, born in Maryland). These black laborers may not have lived on the farm, but were possibly just there for the day when the census was taken. There was a black Hopkins family in the area at the time. From Pioneers of Old Monocacy 1721-1743 by Tacey & Dern: ?On June 18, 1734 ?Sweed?s Folly? was surveyed for John Nelson, Sr. to whom it was patented on November 26, 1737. The Certificate located the parcel of land on ?a branch called Dry Branch? which falls into the Potomac ?near the tract ?Arthur?s Island.? This was a little north of present day Point of Rocks, where the 1873 Atlas shows the home of Otho Wilson Trundle and Jacob Wertz.?

Notes for James Virts: General Notes: James is listed as a 12 year old son for Henry and Virginia Virts in the 1850 Virginia. It is belived that James may have been father by Henry at age 16, however Virginia Leslie could not have been his mother, since she would only be 9 at the time. Also there are no other information available on James or what ever happend to him. What is very strange there is a James Virts, born 1838 in Virginia that married a Cecilia M. Sprague on May 14, 1856 in Lee, Iowa. Also not mentioned in Henry's will, Will Book 2U page, 112, November 1861.

Notes for Charles W. Johnson: General Notes: The Washingtonian, October 7, 1899 Mr. Johnson, on Friday morning last, left his home to take two horses to Washington, which he had sold, when he reached Hamilton the horses became restive and in attending to arrange the harness to correct the cause of the trouble, one of the horses kicked him in the groin, knocked him in an unconscious condition, and caused his death on the following Saturday evening. When injured he was taken to the residence of Mr. Robert Thomas, in Hamilton, and had the best medical attention and kindest care until he died. He was born and raised in this county, near Lovettsville, and was in his 69th year. We have know Mr. Johnson for over thirty years, have had many business transactions with him, and always found him kind and courteous and fair and just in his business relations with us, and we learn, from his community, that there was no home where hospitality and neighborly kindness were more liberally dispensed than from his, and that the poor of his neighborhood had in him one who sympathized with them in their wants and were helped by him whenever he could. He will be missed by such in his community. When a life is marked by such acts of charity and hospitality, it is pleasing to believe, that at the summing up, its guardian angel will "drop a tear blot from the record" whatever errors there may have been such as we all have. He was industrious farmer and a good citizen, and a kind and affectionate parent. His remains were buried on Sunday evening last, a large number attended his funeral and joined their grief at his death, with his family and relatives.

Notes for John L. Derry: General Notes: Loudoun Times Mirror, November 23, 1939 John L. Derry, resident of the Hillsboro community who two weeks ago was cruelly beaten by two neighborhood boys, Elwood Thompson and Charles Longerbeam at his farm home, located on the Hillsboro-Charles Town Road, succumbed from pneumonia late Saturday. Mr. Derry had been under treatment in the local hospital for wounds about the face and body when he contracted pneumonia. Born 66 years ago on the farm where he spent his entire life, hew was well known to the community although seldom left his property that for many years was in a remote section of the neighborhood. Improved roads, however, in recent years had made his home more accessible to the outside world. The old farm in colonial days had served as a wagon stand on journeys West. Mr. Derry was unmarried and leaves no close relatives. Services were held from Salem Methodist Church on Monday and burial made in the churchyard nearby. The assault was made on the evening of November 8 when the boys are said to have gone to the Derry home and with a shovel handle and stones beat the man to a helpless condition. The two boys involved in the attack on Derry's life were but 12 and 18 years of age. Thompson, the older of the tow had been under State Walfare supervison some months ago. His case will go before the grand jury in December. Longerbeam has been placed on probation. The attack on Mr. Derry has brought considerable resentment in the community, said a spokesman for a delegation in Leesburg on Tuesday to ask co-operation in freeing the community of so frequent criminal disturbances.

Notes for Marshall L. Virts: General Notes: The following information has been graciously provided by Jeanie Virts LaGrave. The following newspaper clippings are from a collection of Emory and Bertha Virts, now in the possession of Ralph Virts family. Marshall Virts, Delirious, Jumps From Third Story At University Hospital Marshall Virts, 50 years old, of Point of Rocks, MD, while delirious, jumped from the third story window of the University Hospital about 7 o?clock Thursday morning and sustained injuries that resulted in his death, two hours later. It was stated that Mr. Virts, had been delirious since being taken to the institution on February 13, 1918. He was tied to his bed and constantly watched by the nurses. While the night nurse left his ward to secure medicine for another patient Mr. Virts managed to break his bonds and make his way to a window, which he smashed with a chair. The noise attracted two of the orderlies, who rushed to the ward, but too late to prevent the man from jumping. He fell about 50 feet. His skull and other bones were broken and he died without regaining consciousness. Coroner Driscoll, of the Western district, issued a certificate of accidental death. Reflections by Ralph Hume Virts: Uncle Marsh it seems he was what the old people called ?a man?s man?. He was about 6?2? and big built and didn?t take any guff from anyone. It seems he wasn?t one to start trouble but he didn?t walk away from it either. The family always thought there was something not right about the report of his death, too. They felt he was thrown out the window but couldn?t prove it Daily News, Frederick, MD, February 23, 1918 Marshall L. Virtz, of Point of Rocks, died Thursday, February 21 at 9 o'clock a. m. at the Maryland University Hospital, Baltimore, after an illness of eight days of colitis of the bowels. He was aged fifty years, nine months and 9 days. Besides his widow, Mrs. Della O. Virts, he is survived by one son and one daughter, Walter J. Virts and Mrs. Noah w. Money, both at home. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 10:30 a.m., at St. Luke's Lutheran church Point of Rocks. M. R. Etchison, Jefferson, is the undertaker in charge.
