David Wertz-2 (Johannes B. Wertz-1). He was born 1795 in Botetourt County, VA. He died Bef. 1890 in Roanoke County, VA.

Notes for David Wertz:

General Notes:

The following information has been provided by Clare Magbee.

David Wort, wife Matilda on 1860 Census of Cave Springs, Roanoke, County, VA, p. 354, could not read nor write. On the census of 1850 Roanoke County, VA, Dist. 57, a Jacob Wortz had a daughter age 21, named Matilda, born in VA. Jacob was probably a brother to David. Will Book, Roanoke County, VA, January 20, 1890, an order appointing three of his neighbors to assess his estate. There appears to be no record of this ever being done, but it can be assumed that he died either in late December 1889 or early January 1890. Deeds: 1840 Roanoke County, 145 acres between Black Creek and the Roanoke River, property sold to David Wort. She purchased from Elijah McClanahan, one of Roanoke Valley?s earliest and most prominent settlers. He sold a few acres in 1846. In December 1880 he conveyed his property, including the farming equipment and the livestock, except a bay mare called ?Fran,? to Charles D. Evans and M. J. Evans, his wife. In exchange Evans promised to provide for David. Matilda and mother in law Martha Custer, until their deaths. Evans was son in law. M. J. was Martha Jane Wort. April 9, 1881, the contract was annulled and on June 1, 1888, he entered into a similar contract with Charles K. Simms. This time, the two women were not included, so they probably had died. David made the deed, it read, because he was ?getting older.? Simms was to provide him with a comfortable room, food and clothing, necessary medical attendance in case of sickness and decent burial. If this was not carried out the deed would be void. (This type of deed was very common at the time and was used as a way for heirs to avoid paying inheritance tax.)

Obituary:

Bluffton Evening News, December 12, 1907. A telegram from Marion late Thursday afternoon informed relatives here of the death of William Boden, who was a life-long resident of this city, with the exception of the past year, which was spent at Marion as an inmate of the National Soldier's Home. The telegram of his death was the first word his relatives here had received to the effect that he was in worse physical condition than usual, although he had been afflicted so terribly for a long time that his death was a matter of no surprise. The deceased was born in Wells County (Darke County, OH) in 1837and at his death was seventy years of age. He was a plasterer by trade and followed that occupation for years, until physical disability prevented him from working. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the 47th Indiana Volunteers and served as a faithful soldier until he met with an accident while on duty which disabled him and which in his later years was assigned as the cause of spinal meningitis with which he was so sadly afflicted. While on duty one night in the army he accidently fell into an old well which was not well covered and he was there for some time before his comrades rescued him. He recovered from the injuries at the time, but an injury to the spine was received which caused his affliction in later years. His trouble had grown worse gradually for 15 years. Mr. Boden was married before going to war, but was married a second time in 1866 to Miss Elizabeth Wertz in this city. She and three children, Lewis Boden and Mrs. William McConnell of this city, and Charles Boden of Chicago, survive him. One daughter, Mrs. Emma Reed is dead. The funeral services will be held at the Soldiers Home at Marion at three o'clock Saturday afternoon and the relatives from here will attend, possibly with the exception of the widow, who is sick today and fears she may not be able to go to the funeral. Interment will take place in the Soldiers' Home Cemetery. A committee from the Odd Fellows Lodge of this city, of which Mr. Boden had been a member for many years, will attend the services. The lodge has given much care to Mr. Boden in his last years. Mrs. Emma Snyder (Snider), a sister of William Boden, resides at Deedsville, IN, and one brother, James, is supposed to be living in South Dakota, but no word has been received from him since he visited here five years ago.

General Notes:

The following are excerpts from various letters written by Nannie Bell.

October 26, 1952, letter to George and Peg Stanley:

?Grandmother Frantz was a Dunkard as the Brethren used to be called. She was paralyzed several years before her death. Uncle Isaac, who lived in Franklin County, VA was paralyzed and so were Aunt Polly and Aunt Anna. My father was last to go as you may remember, also paralyzed. Aunt Anna married Sam Wrightsman and went west. They had 3 boys, maybe 4. They came east once when I was quite small. Made Uncle Christs? their headquarters. Did not bring any children. They spent several days at home. Aunt Annie was short and stout, Uncle Sam small and thin. He had a sort of waspish disposition, as he did not want dogs, cats or anything small to touch him. He kicked our little dog who belonged to your father, so we did not like him very well. But we all loved Aunt Annie. They belonged to the Old Order.

Aunt Polly had a big family, most of them went west. John the oldest son ran the farm and also preached. They learned to the Progressive Order. Many of Aunt Polly?s grandchildren progressed out, to them were more worldly churches, as for instance. Ida, who married a lawyer, Mr. Wooldridge of Roanoke. You may remember him. One of the cousin John Eller?s boys and typhoid fever. A disease in those far off days more prevalent and more fatal than now. He had never joined any church. But realizing his condition he begged to be baptized. They consulted but the Doctors said no, it would mean almost certain death. He begged more. Finally Aunt Polly, who seems to be a women of superior sense and a good executive said yes. My father, mother, and I went up to see it. They lived about 3 miles from Cave Spirngs. I was so excited I was trembling. People talked, you see, more in front of me. Well, they made a dam in a swift little brook and they baptized him. They wrapped him in the woolliest of blankets and carried him home. In ten days he was out bed and gaining. Dr. Gale had just come to Cave Springs from his internship at Belleview, New York. He pronounced it ?A miracle by faith?. Later he went west.?

October 26, 1952, letter to Thelma Kettell (granddaughter of Noah).

?Dear Thelma - It does not seem possible that a year has passed since you moved. I had your address but mislaid it. When you are so old as I you may forget too, where you put things.

Little Annabelle is now a big girl. I have two great-grandchildren who are also in the 7th grade this year, one Paulines grandchild, Margaret. Pauline will be 52 years old the 6th of Dec. Now I think if you find all the kinfolk?s Dewey has on record, she, Annabelle will never be lonely. I was at Elise?s daughters, Elsies? when the letter reached me. Mae came in and as she was going to Deweys, I sent them on to him as he has all the dates and everything historical and traditional that he could find for the last 10 or 15 years.

This Cliff G. Wertz is certainly one of Uncle Christion Wertz great-grandsons. Uncle Christ died of throat paralysis. My father Noah Frantz, went up to Cave Springs to be with him night after night for more than 3 months. I have heard him preach. He had a way of saying things that a child could understand. The funeral was at his home and many people came. The house was full and big yard was full. Dr. David Bittle, dean of the Lutheran Theological school, located at Salem, VA spoke for a few minutes, at that time was almost unprecedented, but Grandfather John was as the Brethren used to be called. She was paralyzed several years before her death.

So now you see if you see any Ellers or Wrightsmans you may find kinfolk?s. Besides there are numerous Wertz scattered about.

There is a tradition that a man named Wertz once ?stood in? with one of the Kings of Germany. Being high tempered he fell out with another high ranking German and killed him. Politics and public opinion made it necessary for him to leave Germany. His King saved his property, and sent him to Holland, that country being at war, young Wertz became a Marshall of Holland, but he lived with a woman who have him two sons. When he died his possessions were confiscated and the boys left on their own. They came to America. Each went a different way. The ancestor of John Wertz lived in Fairfax County, Virginia.

So far, Dewey has had no trace of the other son. I think some of the counties of PA hold the solution. But which one? Dewey has 6 children. The oldest are girls, all married. Lee the oldest boy went to Helsinki in the Olympics this year. He won a lot of medals and his school board named the 16th of Aug as Lee Yoder day for all time. He is a the Arkansas University. Has 2 more years there. Then he will serve Uncle Sam 2 years. Richard is with the Air Force. Conrad is quite a good student but has two more years of high school. He, Dewey, has 6 grandchildren. Elise and Hobart are settling down more. They have 4 grandchildren, all boys, 2 are Elise?s and 2 Hobart Jrs. Paulines daughter married the second time, again to an Army man. He adopted the little girl and they are devoted to each other. Jimmy, her son, was discharged from the Army last month. He served one term with the Marines and one with the Engineering dept. most of the time in Korea. He is unmarried as yet. James Yoders two girls are married, one has 3 little girls. Roland was discharged from the Army last month. He had not finished high when he enlisted. He is finishing that at Temple University and will take up drafting. Teds son is at Fort Benning, GA beginning another term of Army life.

On November 3rd I will be 86 years old. Am not sick but old age has been creeping up, have a slight heart condition. My blood pressure is normal. Mind not too good, that is memory. I recognize faces but cannot recall names quickly. When I count ?My Blessings?, The Lord has been very good to me.

Have turned all family papers I posses over to Dewey, who hopes to get all the missing links in time.

Thank your for your letter. I truly appreciated it. My warmest love to all of you. Aunt Nannie Youder.?

Notes from Pauline, daughter of Nannie Belle Wertz:

?Another remembrance from mother (Nannie Belle) was an expert horsewoman. Uncle Jim, on saddle in from of him - girl who was thrown riding side saddle ?lady? drug dress over her head, her period, almost disgraced! all fathers upset. Mother?s brother and father decided astride, one leg on each side, one if not first ?lady? to do this. In this area anyway. Grandmother and Grandfather lived for many years with Aunt Elise and Uncle Hobart in Paxtand and Hummelstown. Grandfather died from the effects of a stroke. Grandmother of old age of 92.

Mother wrote these notes for me to add to records: I was born in Roanoke, VA, 6 Dec 1900. So was my sister, Mae and my two younger brothers, James and Theodore (Ted). Roanoke was originally called Big Lick because of the large salt rocks in the area that the deer came from the mountains to lick. This I was told many years ago. The winter I was six years old I had pneumonia twice. I could not go to school, so my mother taught me first grade. We, my family lived on my grandparent?s farm. This was before the days of school buses, so we walked two miles to and from school. School was one-room, one teacher for all eighth grades. My teacher?s name was Miss Lemon. Not a sweet name but all of us thought she was wonderful. When I was in about fifth grade another room was added, also another teacher. Come Washington?s Birthday, the teacher planned a program, most all of the children took part in it, singing, memorizing, small one act plays. The program was given in the evening and all the parents were asked to it. I liked to memorize, so I memorized a little poem that the line (yet remember it) ?I am the little red stamp with George Washington?s picture, and I must have the right of way.? The teacher?s desk had been moved to the side of the platform, and this was where each girl or boy recited. When my name was called, I walked up, took my place, faced the audience, made a bow, turned around, faced the wall and said my poem, then turned, faced the room, made a bow, and walked off the stage. Everyone laughed, and I did know why. My sisters and brothers kidded me for a long, long time. Mother?s bother Newton Wertz had two daughters. One married and lived in Bristol, VA. Mother and father, with Mae and me, went to visit them. Main Street was the dividing line between Virginia and Tennessee. Or cousin lived on Main Street. Mae and I spent most of the afternoon running across the street saying, ?Now I am in Tennessee!? and running back and saying ?Now I am in Virginia?. When Great Grandfather Wertz signed note and defaulted, Uncle Chris threw the family off the farm. (1912) he was always referred to my grandfather as ?that damn Yankee?. Ironic that years later, Aunt Mae paid for Chir?s burial in Arlington, Philadelphia, PA.?

Obituary:

Francisville Indiana Tribune, September 18, 1941. Despondency over ill health was thought to have caused Charles G. Boden, local barber here for some twenty years, to take his life Monday night. His lifeless body was found about 9 o'clock Tuesday morning by Marshal Clifford Shull in a field a short distance back of his home, and about 300 feet east of the water tower. Nearby was found the razor with which he had committed the rash deed. A letter, addressed to his son William, and mailed in the night box at the local postoffice, told what he wished done with his property. "Pop", as he was known to everyone, had been in failing health for about a year, and during spells of melancholy, it is said, had talked of such an end as suicide. However, the fact that he had not returned to his home on Monday night, followed by the receipt of the message, alarmed his son, and the search and finding of his lifeless body followed. Coroner Harry Querry, of Medaryville, investigated, and it is thought that death occurred about 11:30 Monday night. Charles G. Boden was born at Bluffton, IN 69 years ago. He came to Francesville 18 years ago from Northbrook, IL and had followed the barber profession since that time. "Pop" was widely known over Pulaski County, and truly it may be said that he enjoyed a host of friends among his hundreds of acquaintances. He leaves one son - William D. Boden of this place, and two daughters - Mrs. (Florence) Roscoe Clester, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. (Clara) Oliver Vickery of Northbrook, IL. The body was removed to the Burson Funeral Home, from where services will be conducted this Thursday afternoon, Sept. 18th at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. J.P. Alford, pastor of the Methodist Church. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, east of Francesville.
