Notes for Cornelius Oscar Virts: General Notes: Obituary: The Mirror, April 14, 1881. In Waterford, at his residence of his father, on the evening of the 9th of April, last, Cornnelius O. Virts, of consumption, aged 23 years, 1 month, and 21 days. Day by day we saw him fade, And greatly sink away, And often in our hearts we prayed, That he might longer stay. There is a light from our household gone, The voice we love is still, A place is vacant in our home, That never can be filled. BY A FRIEND

Notes for Joseph Lewis Verts: General Notes: The following story is from the book "Loudoun County Families and History" compiled by Jim Presgraves. Joseph L. Verts was born and married in Loudoun County, and has here passed the years of his busy and honorable life. His birth was on the 8th of July 1821; his parents, now deceased, were William and Phebe Verts; and the wife whom he chose was Eliza Ann Baker. She was born in Loudoun County, September 21, 1826, and the date of her marriage with Mr. Verts was February 3, 1848. Her parents were George and Ann (Verts) Baker, and on her mother's side she is descended from the same pioneer family of Verts from which Joseph L. Verts is descended. Conrad Verts, grandfather of Joseph L., and maternal great-grandfather of his wife was one of the earliest settlers of Loudoun County. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph L. Verts have reared a family of six girls and seven boys, of whom all are living, and in Loudoun County, except the youngest daughter, Oda L., who died after five days' illness, in March 1882, at the age of fourteen years and four months. These children were named: George W., Lydia C., Charles E., Mary E., James F., Joseph A., Anna L., Jonah O., John H., Jane R., Isaac M., Foda C., and Oda L. Mrs. Verts had two brothers, Charles and George W. Baker, in the Union army during the War Between the States. Both were prisoners at Richmond, where Charles died in 1865; George was also wounded in 1862, near Leesburg. Joseph L. Verts is a farmer, and may be addressed at Oatlands, Loudoun County, Virginia.

Notes for John Henry Virts: General Notes: Loudoun Times Mirror, 1918 story: Mr. Verts Resigns as Rural Carrier. Mr. John H. Verts, of near Leesburg, one of the first appointed Leesburg rural mail carriers, who has most faithfully and acceptably discharged his duties since October 1, 1902, has voluntarily resigned and retired to his pleasant suburban country home, ?Glennwood?. Mr. Verts and Mr. Henry Ellmore were Leesburg?s two first rural mail carriers, appointed when rural routes were established during N. C. Nichol?s term as postmaster at Leesburg, and prior to the more formal examinations. A better record than that of Mr. Verts, as to his long continuance of over sixteen years, with greater satisfaction to the patrons served on the same route in the main for the entire time, is rarely know. At times it has been said by postmasters under whom he so faithfully served that when it seem almost impossible for any one to get over or through the roads, or weather the storms, he always covered his route, if any other carrier did, and oftimes when roads were impassable, leaving his horse or vehicle and walking much of his distance, in order that no one might miss their eagerly awaited and valuable mail; and the worse the weather, the more it was to be appreciated. Much of the time he had his vigilant wife as his substitute and assistant, in fact as well as in name, and Postmaster Carter is very pronounced in his regrets in losing this most agreeable carrier, and he agrees with all other preceding postmasters in saying for both that their services were always most pleasing, courteous, faithful and reliable, while in the office as well as toward their patrons. Obituary: Blue Ridge Herald, October 29, 1939. Funeral Services were held Wednesday in Vienna for John Henry Virts. He was a native of the County and formerly lived near Leesburg where he was a mail carrier for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura V. Virts. Interment was in Hillsboro Cemetery.

Notes for Oda Lucy Verts: General Notes: Obituary: The Mirror, March 23, 1882. Oda Lucy Virts, died at her parents, Mr. J. L. Virts, near Oatlands, Va., on Thursday 15th of March after a short illness of 6 days, 15 years of age. She leaves a father, mother, 5 sisters and 7 brothers. Sweet Oda Lucy has gone to rest, With the angels in heaven forever blest. Oh may we all in future prepare, To most our dearly beloved one there. She will silently sleep beneath the tomb, Since called by Death to hear her doom. The Saviour summoned her away, That's why she could no longer stay. She called her friends all up at night, And kissed them all good bye. And then she vanished from our sight, To that sweet home on high. A FRIEND

Notes for Joseph Israel Virts: General Notes: Obituary: Loudoun Telephone, December 26, 1890. Israel Virts at his residence in Waterford, Dec. 13th, of consumption, in the 44th year of his age. Day by day we saw him fade And gently sink away, And often in our hearts we've prayed That he might longer stay. There is a light from our household gone, The voice we loved is still, A placed is vacant in our house That never can be filled. He has reached the joys of heaven, He is one of the sainted band, For his head a crown of gold is given, And a harp is in his hand. He called his friends all up at night And bid them all good bye, And then he vanished from our sight; To that sweet home on high. BY HIS BROTHER
